Day 4, December 28, 2015
We started the day off with breakfast at the Broken Yolk
Café. It took a while to get all 288
through the lines but it was worth it!
They kept cranking out the food and took care of us well. Next stop we visited the USS Midway, one of
America’s longest-serving aircraft carriers.
It is like a floating city! It is
amazing that it can even float! Everyone
explored the ship and could see where the crew slept, ate, and got a glimpse of
what it was like serving on the ship. We
could go on the main deck as well to see their extraordinary collection of
aircraft. Part of the educational
package was for the students to have a pre-tour video conference with the
educational staff during class on Thursday before break. They gave us a history of the Midway with
great detail regarding its important role in the evacuation of Saigon during
the Vietnam War. They said that we are
the farthest away they have ever conducted such a “virtual classroom” before
and were really impressed with the questions the students asked. One student shared with me that her
grandfather served as a surgeon on board the USS Midway! As we walked through the belly of the ship,
we were humbled to realize what a sacrifice our troops make to live on a ship
like that, and then on top of that to risk their lives to protect our
freedom. Thank you veterans!
Next stop was to eat lunch on board the Adventure Hornblower
on our way out to sea for whale watching.
This 3 hour tour (cue Giligan’s Island music) didn’t disappoint! We saw no less than 10 sightings! “Thar she blows!!!” is what we called out as
the whale exhaled. We all cheered when
the whale dove back down and showed it’s enormous tail! Some common puns used were, “This is whaley
fun!” “It’s been awhale since we’ve seen
a whale!” “This is overwhaleming” “That’s a whale of a whale!”…you get the
picture:)
After we had an amazing supper at Buca di Beppo, we went to
Coronado Island to see the Lamb’s Players Theatre production of “All I Want For
Christmas”. Before the show started, the
students had fun doing the wave back and forth (with a spontaneous “slow
motion” wave), dancing in the isles, chanting section cheers back and forth,
and just having the time of their lives!
Dr. Dressen gave a good pep talk to the students that included
cancelling school tomorrow due to the snow in Minnesota!!! During the show, the students were amazing
audience members with an instant standing ovation at the end. One of the cast members spoke to us at the
conclusion of the production and said that she is from Minnesota! She gushed about how we were the best
audience they’ve had for the run of this show!
Whew! We’re wiped! Time for some rest…
